50 years ago — James P. Tuttle of the Imperial American Legion post was installed as commander of the county council of veterans' organization last night in Calipatria. The Holtville resident is the first Legionnaire to hold the office who was born in the Valley .

40 years ago — Mortars are positioned, rockets are posed and gunners are getting last-minute instruction as firemen prepare for the annual fireworks display at 8 p.m. in Calipatria. Each year the Fire Department provides the show.

30 years ago — An all-out investigation covering almost one month and involving at least seven law enforcement agencies was completed recently by the Bureau of Narcotics at the Calexico Port of Entry. It resulted in the seizure of one aircraft, 800 pounds of marijuana and four vehicles together with the arrest of seven San Francisco-area residents.

20 years ago — Spurred by the discovery of a major natural gas deposit in Mexico, oil companies have been snatching up Imperial County drilling rights in the last few weeks. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management reports oil and gas exploration leases have been taken out for more than 1.7 million acres in Imperial and Riverside counties since a PEMEX well in the Gulf of California hit natural gas in mid-May.
