50 years ago — The mercury in Imperial Valley rose today like a skyrocket as the Fourth of July holiday season began. Valley weather is promised to be just as hot, and hundreds of residents fled for a one-day Wednesday vacation in cooler weather.

40 years ago — Skyrockets, Roman candles and many other types of fireworks, all valued at $1,800, were being prepared for a giant display at the Imperial County and American Legion celebration at the county fairgrounds in Imperial. The elaborate ground displays were being prepared this morning for the 75-minute show.

30 years ago — The $1.35 million 156-unit planned hotel near Imperial County is dead for the time being. The layout would have accommodated 300 people overnight, employed 130 persons receiving annual payroll of $480,000, unnamed investors estimated.

20 years ago — San Diego inmates, who are the first to sample treatment at the new Imperial County jail, rate the food and the facility as about the best they have tried.
