The county Coroner's Office has released the name of a man killed when his pickup collided with a tractor-trailer rig on Highway 111 on June 28.

Luis Villalobos, 39, of Desert Hot Springs, was killed by the fire that engulfed his vehicle in the wake of the crash.

The collision occurred at 11:20 p.m. on the highway south of Worthington Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Villalobos was driving his pickup north when he attempted to cross the double yellow lines into the southbound lanes.

Hayes has said he thinks Villalobos was attempting to pass a tractor-trailer rig when he crossed the double yellow lines.

As he crossed the yellow lines, Villalobos moved into the path of a tractor-trailer rig driven by Richard Rivera, 36, of Lansing, Mich.

The vehicles collided head-on and the pickup came to rest on the east shoulder of the highway and was engulfed in flames. The rig came to rest on the west shoulder blocking the southbound lanes.

Hayes said witnesses tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers but were unable to do so. Highway Patrol officers also tried to put out the fire.
