Youth sports: Takata wins two golds

NATIONAL CITY — Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics swimmer Yuri Takata brought home two gold medals from the Southbay Aquatics 12-and-under A/B swim meet here last weekend.

Takata won the ‘A' 50-meter backstroke (35.74 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1 minute 17.81 seconds). She took second in the ‘A' 50 breaststroke (41.17), fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:49.26) and fifth in the 50 butterfly (35.22) and 50 freestyle (31.90).

IVDA's Ali Hannon took third in the 8-and-under girls ‘A' 50 breaststroke and seventh in the 100 freestyle. In the 9-10 girls class, IVDA's Julia Hannon took third in the 100 breaststroke and sixth in the 50 breaststroke, 200 IM and 50 butterfly.

In the ‘B' division, IVDA's A.J. Mason took third in the boys 8-and-under 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke, fourth in the 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 breaststroke. IVDA's Ali Hannon took sixth in the 50 butterfly and eighth in the 50 backstroke. IVDA's Alexandra Mason was fourth in the girls 9-10 50 butterfly.


In the 11-12 girls class, IVDA's Stevie Wills took second in the 100 backstroke and 50 breaststroke, fifth in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 50 butterfly. IVDA's Amanda Mason took fifth in the 50 freestyle and Kristi Emanuel was eighth in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM. The team of Wills, Takata, Emanuel and Amanda Mason took third in the 200 medley relay and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Suns qualify for Nationals

ESCONDIDO — Twenty-two Imperial Valley Suns qualified for the National Amateur Athletic Union's Junior Olympic Track and Field Championship at a meet here last weekend.

The top four competitors in each event qualified for the national meet in Norfolk, Va. Suns qualifiers were:

In the sub-bantam class, Joseph Lopez in the 400 meters and Francisco Lemus in the 800 and long jump.

In the bantam class, Spencer Hughes in the 400 and Antonio Ramirez in the 400 and 800.

In the midget class, Jovane Camacho in the 400 and 800.

In the youth class, Josh Friley in the 800 and 1,500, Miguel Barron in the 1,500 and 3,000, Erica Camacho in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000, Aletta Black in the discus, shot put and triple jump and Nadia Llanas in the high jump.

In the intermediate class, Jennifer Black in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and high jump, Rachel Hernandez in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000, Sarah Godoy in the 1,500 and 3,000, Rashauna Amos in the 100 and 200, Martin Garcia in the triple jump and long jump, Miguel Padilla in the 1,500 and 3,000, John Valdez in the 400, Eric Henderson in the 1,500 and 3,000 and Daniel Osuna in the 800 and 1,500.

In the young men's division, Jarrell Henderson in the high jump and 100.
