Voice: How about a J. Leonard Speer street in Calipatria?

July 07, 2001

Hi. My name is Zandra Speer-Pendleton and I am the daughter of Chief J. Leonard Speer of Calipatria. As you know my dad was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 10, 1998.

I've been reading your online paper for a number of months now and I must tell you that I really do enjoy and appreciate it. Lately, there have been a few letters from citizens of Calipatria about renaming streets after people of Spanish descent. Well, here is a request they probably have not even given a second thought to.

My dad was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. He gave the last 10 years of his life to the city of Calipatria, working 24 hours a day seven days a week. He died for that city.

Wouldn't it be appropriate to at least name the Police Department in honor of his name? If not, then perhaps a street? I know I am probably asking too much but this man served not only Calipatria but the whole Imperial Valley for 42 years!!

Just a thought. Again thank you so much. I really enjoy reading and staying in touch by way of your online paper.
