50 years ago — An El Centro lifeguard Friday afternoon saved the life of a 7-year-old boy in the municipal swimming pool. Guard Bob Johnson, 20, pulled the limp body from the water at 2:20 p.m. and immediately applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

40 years ago — El Centro's recreational swim team, the Water-Logs, took 62 first-, second- and third-place positions at the Coachella Valley Corvina Swim Club dual meet July 6. The Water-Logs won the meet.

30 years ago — The Imperial Valley Special Olympics' 25 champions from their April meet will join 1,400 other winners from California, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii at the University of California, Los Angeles on Friday to participate in the two-day Western Special Olympics.

20 years ago — Valley farmers are banding together to get better lease terms on the natural gas that may lie below their land. Since the mid-May discovery of a major natural gas deposit in the Gulf of California, many local farmers have been contacted by oil companies. A depth of 1,200 feet or more would probably be necessary to strike gas in the Valley, according to Mike Wallman, manager of the Imperial Valley Farm Bureau.
