Transient arrested in Calexico, bail set at $20,000

CALEXICO — A 59-year-old transient was arrested here Sunday after he allegedly through a bottle that struck a 17-year-old boy in the knee, according to Calexico police Sgt. Jim Neujahr.

The transient, Jose Maria Herran Perez, was booked into the county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. His bail was set at $20,000.

Neujahr said, according to witnesses Perez was near the 100 block of Rockwood Avenue about 5:30 p.m. shouting and trying to hit people. Neujahr said witnesses reported Perez hit five people.

At one point, Perez, who was holding a bottle in a paper bag, reportedly threw the bottle, striking the 17-year-old in the right knee.

The boy was treated at the scene and did not require further medical attention.

Neujahr said Perez was thought to be under the influence of alcohol.
