50 years ago — A light plane pilot, forced to land south of Salton Sea Beach on Sunday afternoon when his plane's carburetor iced up, nosed his Cessna 146 into the sand during an attempted takeoff. Sheriff's deputies said the man was not injured.

40 years ago — Income and expenses both went up at El Centro Community Hospital during the past fiscal year. Income in 1960-61 was $682,900 compared to $660,100 a year ago. Expenses for the same period were $669,000 compared to $664,800.

30 years ago — Imperial County contracts with individual volunteer fire departments need to be strengthened to specifically define what is expected, county Fire Chief Rudy Medina told the Board of Supervisors. "I want some teeth in our ordinance. We are paying for the service; let's get the service."

20 years ago — The Arabs are staying at Imperial Valley College. After a seven-month dispute over changing the mascot title because of the Iran situation, the college Board of Trustees voted to keep the name Wednesday night.
