50 years ago — Clyde Lee, executive assistant to the El Centro City Council, tied for third place in the national Optimist Club golf tournament June 20 at the Western Country Club in Detroit. Lee took a 76 score while the winner finished at 74.

40 years ago — Ten sticks of dynamite, allegedly intended to blow up at least two Valley labor camps, were unearthed near El Centro, according to authorities. Ex-convict Arthur Williams, fresh from a successful lie detector test, told newsmen he was shown the hiding place and told to use it to blow up "the Danenberg Camp and the Reception Center."

30 years ago — Twenty-one Imperial Valley Special Olympics champions won 25 top medals at the Western Special Olympics meet in Los Angeles.

20 years ago — Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.'s last-minute decision to allow aerial spraying against the Mediterranean fruit fly has left a wake of ill will among local farmers, according to an Imperial Valley Farm Bureau spokesman.
