Woman files CHP report after Lumina follows her twice

July 16, 2001|By AARON CLAVERIE, Staff Writer

A 21-year-old woman allegedly has been harassed by a man driving a white Chevrolet Lumina.

The reported harassment started July 8 as the woman drove up the Interstate 8 grade toward San Diego for a week-long visit.

"I was taking off up the grade last Sunday and I encountered someone," she said Saturday. "He wasn't letting me pass and he was coming parallel to my car."

The driver of the Lumina four-door sedan continued to tail and allegedly harass the woman all the way to Alpine.

The man didn't make any suggestive overtures to her, she said, but when she sped up and left him behind she could see him, "snap his fingers a couple times."

She took down the car's license plate number before she sped away.

When the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, came back from San Diego on Friday she encountered the same person driving the same car near Ocotillo.

"He came parallel to me once more; passing me and slowing down," she said.

The man tailed her all the way to Highway 111 off I-8, where he went one way and she went another.

"It wasn't a coincidence," she said concerning the man's reappearance.

She said the plates of the car she encountered Friday were the same plates she noted Sunday.

"I didn't know how he found me again. I thought it was kind of odd," she said.

After getting home, she called the California Highway Patrol and reported the Lumina's plate numbers.

CHP officers told her the plates matched those of a rental car from Arizona.
