WINTERHAVEN — It took only about 15 minutes for Imperial County Sheriff's Office deputies to catch a 40-year-old man who stole a bicycle from a 10-year-old girl who had battled for her bike.

Deputy Kirk Nerva said a man later identified as Laurencio Tristran stole a bicycle in the 500 block of Railroad Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Nerva said Tristan apparently had been drinking with another man on the front lawn of the man's apartment.

Tristan told the other man he was going to the take the bike, which was near the neighbor's lawn, Nerva said.

The girl who owns the bike was visiting a friend who lives next door to where the men were drinking.

Tristan allegedly then took the bike. The girl was told by the man who was drinking with Tristan what had happened.

As Tristan was riding away, the girl ran after him. He stopped and got off the bike. As he got off bike the girl jumped on, according to reports,

Tristan pushed her off the bike and rode off again, Nerva said.

Tristan was caught by deputies near the intersection of Winterhaven Drive and Highway 24.

He apparently was heading toward Paradise Casino, which is near where the incident occurred.

Tristan was arrested for strong-armed robbery. Information on whether he is still in jail was unavailable this morning.
