Since my last letter (June 27) on the plight of immigrants, this newspaper has printed several articles on immigrants. 1. July 1, Arizona is pushing legislation to allow pre-natal care for illegal immigrants and Texas has passed a law to make it easier for illegal "aliens" to attend college. Yes, Texas! 2. July 3, four more immigrants die in the Arizona desert. 3. July 4, a picture of John Hunter placing a water station in the west border desert and announcing that more stations will be placed in the east border desert. 4. July 6, another immigrant drowns in the All-American Canal. 5. July 8, another immigrant dies in our desert. 6. July 10, President Bush in his speech on Ellis Island wants to speed up the process of immigration and citizenship.
In the light of all this positive national trend to take action to help immigrants and deaths, I hope that our county and Imperial Irrigation District reps will also feel the need to extend aid to these people who only seek a better life for their family. In turn their labor and intelligence will boost our economy and make us and even better and stronger nation.
