50 years ago — Carl Hausmann of America Fruit Growers Inc. of Brawley has been appointed vice chairman of the southern agriculture committee of the state Chamber of Commerce. Hausmann will assist Donald A. Steving of Riverside, the chairman.

40 years ago — An El Centro man, 53, was robbed by two men as he was driving to Mexicali. On Dogwood Road, one of the men put a knife to the victim's throat, ordered him to stop the car, took his wallet and drove off with the automobile.

30 years ago — There's a lot of painting, gluing, bounding, dribbling, dunking, whacking and grunting going on at the Central Union High School gymnasium as well as some splashing at El Centro municipal Plunge. It's all part of the El Centro summer recreation program.

20 years ago — It's business as usual for three major Imperial Valley post offices today despite the threat of nationwide strike. Postal employees are asking for a raise in the neighborhood of 12 percent while the government has offered a 5 percent hike.
