Lack of water hampers attempt to battle house fire in east El Centro

July 20, 2001|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

Firefighters from the Imperial County, El Centro and Holtville departments joined forces to battle a house fire east of El Centro this morning.

About 11 firefighters were at a home at 327 E. Evan Hewes as of 9:40 a.m., where a fire had engulfed the house and a vehicle parked next to it. Hampering the effort was the fact that there is no water source in the area.

The fire broke out sometime before 9:20 a.m., which was when firefighters got the first call about the blaze.

Firefighters were awaiting a tanker to arrive around 9:45 a.m. It was thought more firefighters were going to be called to the blaze as Holtville firefighters arrived around 9:45 a.m. Imperial Irrigation District employees had been called in to cut power to the area.

There were no reports of injuries.
