50 years ago — The Department of Agriculture has named two Brawley members to the California-Arizona desert administrative committee for the year beginning Aug. 1. J.E. Harshman and Joe Russo will serve on the eight-man committee which studies grapefruit market conditions.

40 years ago — The Imperial County Planning Commission yesterday approved a $600,000 cotton-compressing and warehouse facility to be built one mile south of Brawley on Dogwood Road.

30 years ago — Imperial Valley telephone users will find another increase in their monthly bills shortly as Pacific Telephone Co. takes advantage of the state Public Utilities Commission permission to boost rates $143 million per year. Locally, rates will raise private line residence bills 90 cents per month.

20 years ago — Alan Fowlkes of Imperial continues to be one of the hottest pitchers for the San Francisco Giants organization. Pitching for Shreveport in the Texas League, Fowlkes won two games recently and improved his season record to 10-2. His control has been excellent and he's recorded 111 strikeouts in 127 innings.
