Brawley resident not cooperating with police after being shot in back

July 25, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — Police are investigating the shooting of a 31-year-old Brawley resident who initially wasn't aware he had been shot.

Acting Lt. John Myers said Jesus Ruiz was shot in the back in the 700 block of E Street just before 4 p.m. Monday.

Myers said Ruiz is not cooperating with investigators so their knowledge of the incident is limited.

"He's not telling us what happened," said Myers.

"He wasn't even aware he was shot," added Myers.

Myers said investigators don't think the shooting was gang-related.

"There's nothing leading us that way," he said.

Myers said the wound was not life-threatening but Ruiz was air-lifted to a hospital in San Diego, where he will undergo back surgery.

No arrests have been made and the case is still under investigation.
