IID board taking more time to review PCAC charter and power pole locations

July 25, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors delayed action on two agenda items at its meeting Tuesday: approving revisions to the Power Consumers Advisory Committee's bylaws and charter and approving the relocation of two power poles at no or reduced cost to the Boys and Girls Club of Coachella Valley.

Directors requested more time to review the PCAC's changes, which were approved by the PCAC at its last meeting July 19.

The board pushed back taking action on relocating two power poles in Coachella because the district is looking at right-of-way issues.

The Boys and Girls Club of Coachella Valley is constructing a new facility in Coachella. Designs for the facility require one pole be moved further from a proposed gymnasium to meet safety requirements and another be relocated because it lies in the middle of a proposed cul-de-sac.

The Boys and Girls Club is asking the IID to forgive it the $342,436.69 cost of relocation.

The IID PCAC, which heard the club's presentation at its meeting last week, voted not to support forgiving the club the cost.

The board did approve a request by the IID public affairs department to design, develop and construct the second phase of IID's gallery exhibits at Pioneers' Museum near Imperial.

The financial estimate for phase two's continuation through 2001 is $50,000 and will be obtained from other public affairs projects that will be canceled or rescheduled for 2002, according to agenda materials.

Additionally, public affairs will be soliciting private tax deductible donations to offset some of the cost.

Phase one of the gallery was completed in June.

Also approved were changes to IID's agricultural tailwater structure replacement program. Under the changes, landowners/water users with non-compliant tailwater boxes have 45 days after notification to replace the structures or water will be discontinued or refused.

Formerly, IID staff or contractors replaced the structures after a six-month replacement period and billed landowners/water users. This resulted in $70,000 of uncollected charges.

The issue of changing meeting times from 5 p.m. to 1 p.m. died when Director Bruce Kuhn's motion failed to be seconded.

The board agreed to change its August meeting schedule by canceling the Aug. 21 meeting.

The board next meets at 5 p.m. Aug. 7 in El Centro.
