An El Centro home received extensive fire and smoke damage after a blaze broke out in the master bedroom Friday.

El Centro fire Battalion Chief Bill DuBois said the fire started in the bedroom of a house on the 400 block of Desert Gardens Drive at 10:51 a.m.

DuBois said a married couple who live in the home were asleep in the bedroom when the fire started. The woman awakened to smoke and fire, woke her husband and they fled the house, DuBois said.

The man and woman's names were unavailable.

El Centro firefighters were able to extinguish the fire 15 minutes after arriving on scene. Fire investigators were unsure of the cause of the blaze as of Friday and were unavailable for comment Saturday.

According to El Centro fire officials at the scene, although the blaze was confined to a bedroom a second alarm was called due to the high temperature.

An El Centro fire official told a reporter all off-duty personnel were called on scene for fear those battling the blaze would succumb to heat exhaustion.
