Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Frye Chapel & Mortuary in El Centro for Elmer J. Hawes, 75, of El Centro, who died Thursday in Veterans' Administration Hospital in West Los Angeles.

Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Imperial.

Mr. Hawes was born July 24, 1926, in El Centro, where he attended local schools. He married Gertrude Sigmon on Jan. 15, 1956, in Holtville.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in World War II. After the war he returned to the Imperial Valley and worked several jobs, including for the Imperial Irrigation District for several years.


He also owned and operated his own auto and electrical shop for the last several years.

He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Past Commanders of the American Legion of California.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Gertrude Hawes, in 1990.

Survivors include his son, Joel Hawes of Yucaipa; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Larry Copeland of Lake City, Fla.; brothers, Robert Hawes of El Centro and Harold Hawes of Yuma; and companion, Margie Quijada of El Centro.



Memorial services will be at 9 a.m. Monday in Faith Assembly of God in Imperial for Betty Jean "Betsy" Pollard, 64, of El Centro, who died Thursday in her home. Pastor Bill Brewer will officiate.

Burial will be private.

Mrs. Pollard was born Sept. 20, 1936, in Miles, Texas. She married Jim Pollard in Yuma on Aug. 27, 1955.

Mrs. Pollard worked for the Imperial Valley Press for 20 years and at Brunner's and El Noh restaurants.

She had been a classroom assistant at Faith Academy in Imperial since her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Sabrina Nicole Pollard.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Pollard of El Centro; sons, Randy and Cole Pollard, both of El Centro; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Ron Gallaher of Holtville; brother and companion, Bill Eldred and Kay Campbell of El Centro; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Bob Wilson of Angeles Oaks; and grandchildren, Jamie Pollard of Brawley, Travis and Kristol Gallaher, both of Holtville, and Charles Pollard of El Centro.

The family suggests donations be sent to the Betsy Pollard memorial scholarship fund at Faith Assembly of God, 320 S. J St., Imperial, CA 92251.


No services are planned for David L. McLaughlin, 72, of El Centro, who died Thursday in his home.

His remains will be cremated.

Mr. McLaughlin was born April 29, 1929, in Pomona. He worked as a senior zanjero at the Imperial Irrigation District for 43 years.

He enjoyed making violins and woodworking. He was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers.

Survivors include his wife, Jenny McLaughlin of El Centro; son, David A. McLaughlin of El Centro; daughters, Jenny Steckling of San Diego and Andrea Robinson of El Centro; daughter and son-in-law, Salena and Ray Hawley of Yuma; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Rosa McLaughlin of El Centro and Dan and Glenda McLaughlin of Poway; 14 grandchildren and seven grandchildren.


Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in Calexico for Ruben A. Moreno, 32, of Palmdale, a former El Centro resident who died July 28 of heart problems in Lake Elizabeth.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hems Bros. chapel in Calexico. The Rev. Arturo Padilla of Holtville Iglesia Del Valle will officiate.

Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.

Mr. Moreno was born Sept. 10, 1968, in El Centro where attended and graduated local schools.

He had been working for The Men's Wearhouse as an assistant manager for the past two years. He had worked as a fiber optic lineman from 1991 to 1996.

He was a member of Amistad Cristiana in Palmdale.

He was preceded in death by his uncle, Tony Moreno Jr., and grandfather, Tony Moreno.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Moreno of Palmdale; father and his wife, Rudolph and Liz Moreno of El Centro; mother and her husband, Catalina and Dr. John Haworth of Aurora, Neb.; paternal grandmother, Christina Moreno of Calexico; daughters, Azalya Amour Moreno of Palmdale and Samantha Cuen Moreno of El Centro; son, Ruben Angel Moreno of Palmdale; brother, Rudolph C. Moreno of Calexico; sister, Francine Medina of La Mesa; aunts and uncles, Mercedes and Larry Cuen of Las Vegas and Richard and Mary Breadernitz of Imperial; and two nieces and eight cousins.
