August 04, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

El Centro police arrested four people on suspicion of assaulting and robbing three juveniles early Saturday.

El Centro police Sgt. Theresa Quinn said three juveniles, whose ages were unavailable, were walking from a friend's house around 1:30 a.m. when they were approached by four individuals inside a car near the 1500 block of Ocotillo Drive.

The four suspects asked the victims for money. After the juveniles refused, Quinn said the suspects got out of their car and allegedly beat up the victims with their fists and robbed them.

The suspects, later identified as Raul Orta, 18, of El Centro, Gabriel Gastelum Velasquez, 23, and Gilbert Gastelum Velasquez, 20, both of Heber, and a 14-year-old, fled in the car with an undisclosed amount of money, Quinn said.

As police were interviewing the victims, the suspects' car drove by. One of the victims identified the car in which the suspects were traveling, which was later pulled over by police. The occupants were arrested on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy.

Orta and the Valesquezes were in county jail Saturday with bail set at $50,000 each. Further information on the 14-year-old suspect was unavailable.

The juveniles did not require medical treatment.
