HOLTVILLE — A 19-year-old El Centro man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after he was involved in a single-vehicle rollover early Saturday in which he and two other passengers were injured.

The driver, Carl McElvany, suffered major injuries in the accident, which occurred around 12:05 a.m. on Norrish Road west of Highway 115 near Holtville, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Joe McDermott said.

McElvany remained in El Centro Regional Medical Center on Saturday.

According to McDermott, the crash occurred after McElvany lost control of his pickup on Norrish when a paved section of the road turned to dirt.

McElvany, McDermott said, drove his vehicle onto an elevated dirt shoulder of the road, which struck the metal tire of a piece of heavy machinery used to level land and overturned.

Passengers in McElvany's pickup were Anthony Montoya, 23, and a 15-year-old boy, both of El Centro. Montoya and the teen were treated and released for minor to moderate injuries at the El Centro hospital.

Montoya received moderate injuries to his head and face, while the juvenile was treated for minor injuries to his leg and shoulders.

McDermott said investigating CHP officers are not sure if those in the pickup were wearing seatbelts or if the two passengers were under the influence of alcohol.

He added it isn't known if McElvany was speeding. The accident is still under investigation.
