Suspected DUI driver rolls van on Highway 86

August 06, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

A Brawley man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Friday night after the van he was driving rolled through the median of Highway 86 and landed in the opposite lanes of traffic.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, Jae Joong Kim, 44, was driving north on Highway 86 just south of the Central Main Canal shortly after 11 p.m. Kim, the van's only occupant, reportedly became fatigued and the van drifted to the left. According to the press release, Kim tried to correct his steering but was unable to control his vehicle after turning it to the right. The van ran off the road into the dirt median, where it rolled and came to rest in a southbound lane.

The press release states that a witness saw Kim try to drive away in the damaged vehicle after the accident. The right wheels were knocked loose, however, making it impossible to drive.
