Voice: Give teens more credit when it comes to choices on sex

August 07, 2001

Why don't we give our teenagers more credit?

Do we really believe they are incapable of committing to something important, like abstaining from sex until marriage?

Do we think they lack the intelligence necessary to understand the truth that if they sleep together, they always run the risk of becoming pregnant or contracting a disease? Does it seem impossible to us that they would be able to grasp the reality that no method of birth control is 100 percent effective against pregnancy or disease?

Are they really incapable of true personal responsibility, or are we just unwilling to teach it because we would need to model it for them?
