Calexico police commissioner resigns

says ‘cannot give full attention …'

August 07, 2001|By AARON CLAVERIE, Staff Writer

CALEXICO — Juan Ortiz has resigned from the Calexico Police Commission.

The City Council will be notified of his action at tonight's meeting.

"It is with much reluctance and regret that I resign my position as police commissioner," Ortiz wrote in his resignation letter.

The letter continues, "(There are) more demands on my non-professional hours. As a result, I cannot give my full attention to my responbility to this commission at this time."

Ortiz is the administrative services director for the Calexico Housing Authority.

He had served on the Police Commission for more than three years.

The Police Commission is a five-person advisory group that serves as a link between the commmunity and the Police Department, according to police Sgt. Jim Neujahr.

Ortiz said, "I think that the main goal of the commission is to deal with the safety of our community.

"I think that a lot of people are not informed about the new programs we have at the department including the citizens' patrol and the recent academies."
