Body of possible immigrant found east of Bonds Corner

August 09, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

BONDS CORNER — The remains of what investigators think is the body of an undocumented immigrant were found east of here by U.S. Border Patrol agents Wednesday night.

Border Patrol agents were working in the area of Verde School Road and Holdridge Road when they discovered the body under a bush, said Imperial County Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes.

The body, that of an unidentified male, probably had been in the area for two-and-a-half to three weeks, Hayes said.

Investigators think the man was an undocumented immigrant because of the area in which he was found and the contents of his pockets, Hayes said. The man was carrying Mexican airplane and bus tickets, Hayes said.

There were no visible signs of foul play, Hayes said, adding that the man may have crawled under the bush seeking shade before he died.

The area in which the body was found is between agricultural land and open desert south of Interstate 8.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is scheduled for Saturday.
