ECPD investigating vehicle vs. pedestrian

August 10, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

El Centro police officers are investigating an accident in which an El Centro man sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle this morning.

Dennis McKenzie, 18, of El Centro was crossing Fourth Street near Lenrey Avenue at 5:45 a.m. when he was hit by a vehicle being driven south on Fourth, said El Centro Police Department Sgt. Mike Crankshaw.

McKenzie sustained a broken left leg, a possibly dislocated hip and unknown head wounds, Crankshaw said.

McKenzie was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center, where he was in critical but stable condition this morning, Crankshaw said, adding hospital officials told him they would be flying McKenzie to a hospital in San Diego for further treatment.

Though details were sketchy, Crankshaw said it appears McKenzie tried to jump out of the way but was struck by the vehicle anyway.

The vehicle's driver, Daniel Duarte, 34, of Imperial, was not cited and the incident is under investigation by Officer Mike Davidson.
