Voice: Frequent visitor dismayed about the potential future of the Salton Sea

August 10, 2001

I read with some dismay the letter from Steve Horvitz regarding bill HR2764.

As a frequent visitor to the Salton Sea and non-resident landowner in the Borrego Springs area, I fear this bill will spell the end of the entire Salton Sea recreation area as well as many surrounding environs.

I'm not even sure I will want to drive through the area once selenium-laden dust begins to fill the air.

I guess our annual Easter visits to the sea for bird watching and sunbathing will be over, and summer fishing trips with the kids are off the calendar. So will duck hunting and camping in the desert nearby.

Yes, I'm afraid all those things will be off the calendar, but that won't be the only thing missing. The local businesses will lose our dollars — the tourist dollars, sportsmen's dollars, off-roaders' dollars, snowbird dollars, local labor dollars and all their associated tax dollars.

But it's the lake missing from our map that will be the saddest absence of all.
