CALEXICO — A resident here discovered an object in Nosotros Park on Monday that was later identified as an acid bomb.

Calexico police Sgt. Armando Marquez said a police officer was flagged down by a man in the 800 block of Fifth Street about 6:20 a.m. Monday.

The man told the officer he found something in the park.

Marquez said the officer described the object the man found as a 2-liter bottle.

The officer did not know what the bottle was, so he took it to the city's Fire Department.

Fire Capt. David Lantzer said firefighters determined the bottle was an acid bomb.

Lantzer said the resident and the officer were lucky the bomb didn't detonate while being transported.

"We want the public to know to not move these around. If the bomb would have moved a little (more) it would have set off," said Lancer.

Marquez said, "We all have to be careful. We have to suspect first if it is volatile."

"I'm sure if the citizen knew what he had, he wouldn't have picked it up," added Marquez.

The county arson-bomb unit was called to the Fire Department and detonated the bomb.

Lantzer said the acid in the bomb could have seriously burned someone if it had been detonated accidentally.
