HOLTVILLE — With the hiring of Cathy Denton as Pine School principal, the Holtville Unified School District has its key positions filled for the start of school Aug. 29.

Denton, 46, a native of Holtville now living in El Centro, has been employed by the El Centro Elementary School District since 1985.

"I am ecstatic," Denton said of the prospect of working with the staff at Pine School, which is a kindergarten through eighth grade school.

"I understand they are an exceptional group of people," she said. "I am happy to be back in Holtville. My first job is to see what is going on. We will be focusing on increased student achievement. The staff is already doing an excellent job and we are going to keep getting better."

Board President Bill Thornburg said he is "very pleased" to have someone with Denton's experience leading Pine.

"I am confident that we will continue to see exceptional student achievement under her leadership," he said.

Denton has served in a variety of positions, including classroom teacher in various grades, computer lab teacher and summer school principal at Hedrick and Sunflower elementary schools. Most recently she has been the resource/reading support teacher at Sunflower and Hedrick.

Following her graduation from Holtville High School, Denton earned a bachelor's degree and multiple subject teaching credential from University of California, Riverside, a master's degree from United States International University, and an administrative services credential from San Diego State University. She is enrolled at the University of Redlands in tier II of the professional administrative services credential program.
