HOLTVILLE — The Holtville Unified School District hired Pat Maruca as superintendent during a special board meeting Monday night.

Maruca, 42, of Imperial, said she is "excited" by the challenges of the position.

"I just see a lot of potential," Maruca said. "I see people wanting to come together to make a difference. What I hear from the board and the community is that they are looking for leadership and direction, and I think I can bring that to Holtville, particularly in the area of curriculum and instruction.

Maruca said she intends to "look, listen and learn" during her first few months on the job and try to gain her own perspective of what is happening in the district.

Early next year she hopes to have a series of community forums where she plans to bring together staff, parents and business people to talk about "all the things that are good and all the things that are challenge areas, to look at resources and start prioritizing needs.

"From there I anticipate working with this group to develop a strategic plan," she said. "Essentially what comes from these meetings will probably determine our long range goals. One of the things we need to look at are facilities and probably teacher compensation."

Maruca has been principal at Harding Elementary School in El Centro for four years and previously was principal at Washington Elementary in El Centro. She will be working at both districts until another principal is in place at Harding. She anticipates starting at Holtville full-time in the middle of September.

She was given a three-year contract with an annual salary of $100,00.

Holtville District Board Chairman Bill Thornburg Jr. welcomed Maruca to the district.

"The board is anticipating increased student achievement as a result of her leadership," Thornburg said. "We all look forward to an exciting future for HUSD."

Maruca is a graduate of Central Union High School in El Centro. She has a bachelor's degree in liberal studies from San Diego State University and a master's degree in administration from Point Loma Nazarene College. She is a doctoral candidate through Northern Arizona University. She is fluent in Spanish. In her first administrative position she served as coordinator of bilingual and migrant education in the El Centro Elementary School District.

Holtville's interim superintendent, Anne Mallory, said of Maruca's appointment:

"I've known Pat for many years and have admired her leadership. We're confident she will do a great job. I appreciate the leadership and support of the HUSD governing board, staff and community for working together so well to support the students of Holtville," she said.

"I feel confident that HUSD is on the road to wonderful accomplishments."

Mallory will be returning to her permanent job at the county Office of Education after Maruca starts in her job in Holtville.

Maruca is married to Joe Maruca, District 3 supervisor on the county Board of Supervisors. They have a 3-year-old son.
