50 years ago — Full passenger service from the Western Airline El Centro terminal following the 15-day strike by aircraft mechanics will not resume until Friday, R.M. Monroe, a WAL agent, said. However, starting Tuesday, one flight a day will arrive and leave here, he said.

40 years ago — A thirsty burglar broke into three homes in El Centro Aug. 12 and drank half a gallon of milk in one and took $329 in cash and valuables from the others. One victim reported the burglar entered his house through the rear window and drank the milk from the refrigerator.

30 years ago — Leonard S. Cohen, B.W. Holding Corp. president, said the company plans a "high-class mobile home development" near the Imperial Valley Country Club in Holtville. The initial phase of the development is expected to attract 500 residents.

20 years ago — Both Safeway and Brawley Fire Department officials are trying to determine what caused a fire Wednesday morning in the storage area that extends along the rear of the supermarket. Two Brawley fire trucks were at both ends of the building fighting the fire. Damage to contents was estimated at $5,000 and damage to the building was estimated at $1,000.
