50 years ago — A high-pressure area centered in the Gulf of California has been spewing hot, humid air into Imperial Valley for a few days — and will continue to go on for a few more days, a weatherman said Tuesday.

40 years ago — Sant Sunder Singh, religious leader and president of Spiritual Friends Society of Dehli, India, says a man's purpose in society is to solve problems of mankind through "saintly knowledge." Singh, also an author, is visiting El Centro and the U.S. to lecture about his faith and combat communism.

30 years ago — Traffic at the Calexico Port of Entry experienced a decrease in all areas in July, according to information from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in Calexico. Pedestrian border crossings dropped 8 percent; vehicle traffic dropped a small but noticeable 2 percent; and aircraft traffic logged the largest decrease in activity, with a 40 percent drop over July.

20 years ago — Calexico Hospital's Dr. Paul F. Campana got six little going-away presents this week, gifts he will have to return. Campana delivered six babies this week, four boys and two girls. The six babies, and another delivered by Dr. Amalia Katsigeanis totaled seven babies in the hospital's nursery room, the most this year.
