Four people drive cars into irrigation canals, no serious injuries reported

Four people drove their vehicles into irrigation canals over the first part of the weekend, apparently with no one suffering serious injuries.

The first incident happened in the Holtville area around 5:45 a.m. Friday.

According to county Sherrff's Office logs, a vehicle plunged into a canal filled with 5 feet of water.

The canal is off Hartshorn Road near Perry's Corner.

The driver called the California Highway Patrol from inside the vehicle and the Highway Patrol called in county deputies to pull the vehicle from the canal.

The second incident was in Calipatria, according to the logs. It was 8:50 p.m. Friday when Calipatria police found a white pickup in a ditch with a minimal amount of water near Blair Road. The officers were unable to locate the owner of the truck and left after deputies arrived.


There was no information about the owner or the driver of the truck.

The third incident was in Niland.

At 2:53 a.m. Saturday deputies found a vehicle in a canal with 3 feet of water near the corner of McDonald Road and East Highline Canal Road. There were no injuries in the accident, according to the logs.

The fourth incident was in El Centro.

At 9:43 a.m. Saturday an El Centro man drove his vehicle into a canal near Dealwood Road, near Dogwood Road north of Interstate 8. There were no injuries in the accident.
