50 years ago — Forty-eight women aliens were arrested Aug. 18 when sheriff's officers, city police and immigration patrolmen teamed to raid Brawley, El Centro and Westmorland. Eighteen women were deported. The other 30 were sent to San Pedro for formal deportation procedures.

40 years ago — A crop duster pilot escaped with minor injuries when his plane hit a power line and plowed into a muddy field south of Brawley. Crews from the Imperial Irrigation District were busy recovering the quarter mile of line the plane ripped loose. Workers were hampered by knee-deep mud.

30 years ago — Calexico Fire Chief F.S. Pedroza, in his monthly report to the City Council, stated the Fire Department responded to 17 calls in July in the city and five calls in the county.

20 years ago — The Imperial City Council on Wednesday night adopted a $1.4 million budget for 1981-82 but failed to include pay raises and increases in the rates for water, sewer and trash pickup. Those issues may be voted on later and added to the budget by amendment.
