Thanks: AFS issues thanks to the community, special friends

August 21, 2001

Thank you for letting us use the "Voice of the People" column to issue thanks to the entities who were generous enough to donate recently to the Imperial Valley AFS scholarship fund. High school students from throughout the Valley are eligible for scholarships from this fund to assist them in taking advantage of the international programs of American Field Service, the leading student exchange organization.

This year, four high school students from Imperial County participated in the AFS American Abroad program. One traveled to Chile for the summer and three students leave at summer's end for year-long exchanges in Belgium, Italy and Germany. There they will attend school with their new brothers and sisters.

Each student resides with a host family for his or her stay. These students return home more self-reliant and with special knowledge gained with their "on the spot" experience. Their horizons are broadened and they make new friendships and gain a cultural education that will be with them all their lives. They can spread the word that wonderful people are found the world over!

Sincere thanks to donors and friends of AFS: Optimist Club of El Centro, the Meyer Foundation, Imperial Printers, Meek Electric, Mark and Ricki Schmidt, Kelly and Cheryl Keithly and Quellen Co. Their financial assistance results in improved world understanding! The helping hand is really appreciated by the students, who all have been working and fund-raising on their own to achieve their goals.

Students interested in participating in future overseas stays may communicate with the AFS adviser or counselor at their local high school (or call Diana at 355-2761).
