August 22, 2001

CALEXICO — U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a suspected stolen vehicle here this morning in which 10 to 14 undocumented immigrants were traveling.

Calexico police Sgt. Victor Legaspi said his department was advised around 5:54 a.m. that Border Patrol agents were following a white sport-utility vehicle with Texas license plates, thought to be stolen.

The SUV was headed east on Dogwood Road just off Interstate 8.

Border Patrol agents pulled over the vehicle on David Navarro Road and Highway 98.

Legaspi said agents arrested the driver, George Calderon Gonzalez, 20, of Mexicali, and detained the immigrants.

Legaspi added the vehicle was headed toward Mexicali but he wasn't sure why.

The case was still under investigation this morning.
