More candidates file for seats on school boards, utility districts

August 24, 2001|By LAURA MITCHELL, Staff Writer

Five more people declared candidacy when the filing deadline for school boards and local utility districts was extended.

The deadline to file papers for candidacy automatically extends when an incumbent chooses not to run. It was extended this year in some local elections from Aug. 10 to Aug. 15.

Miguel Miranda joined Helen M. Noriega, Robert Prior, Robert Hansen and incumbent Rodney Arterberry as candidates for two seats on the Brawley Union High School District board.

Jeff Zendejas, Michael Fong and Darik A. Erickson were added to the list of candidates with Thomas M. Everett and incumbents Mike Aleksick and Patty Dockstader for three seats on the Calipatria Unified School District board.

Maria Turner joined incumbent Michael Johnson as a candidate for the Meadows Union School District board. There will be no election in that race since there are only two candidates for three open seats. The school board will make an appointment to fill the third seat.

Ruben O. Lopez withdrew his declaration of candidacy, leaving Carlos R. Acuña as the only candidate for the Imperial Community College District Area Two seat.

The county Board of Supervisors will make appointments to open seats in local utility districts, called special districts, in cases where not enough candidates filed. Those districts are:

· Bard Water District, one seat

· Bombay Beach Community District, one short-term seat

· Palo Verde County Water District, two seats

· Seeley Water District, two seats

Those interested in an appointment should contact the particular board or the Board of Supervisors. Appointees must be registered voters and live within the district boundaries.
