August 25, 2001|By RICHARD MONTENEGRO, Staff Writer

Award-winning romance novelist Jill Marie Landis will be in El Centro on Thursday for a book-signing promoting her latest offering, "Summer Moon."

From 7 to 8:30 p.m., Landis will sign copies of the novel at Fifth Ave. Books, 510 W. Main St.

Set in Texas in the 1850s, "Summer Moon" chronicles the life of Kate Whittington, the orphanage-raised, abandoned daughter of a town harlot. Approaching 30 years old, Kate answers a newspaper ad placed by Reed Benton, a widowed Texas rancher looking for a mail-order bride.

Publisher's Weekly states of "Summer Moon": "This sweet but not-too-sugary romance is a breezy, beach-blanket read, offering up well-developed characters, a compelling plot line and a pleasing slice of Americana."

Landis' list of best-selling novels includes "The Orchid Hunter," "Come Spring," "Blue Moon" and "Sunflower."

Over her career, Landis has won two Romantic Times Career Achievement Awards and a RITA award from the Romance Writers of America for "Best Romance of the Year."

Fifth Ave. Books owner Bonnie Olesh said of the Landis book-signing: "I think it's a terrific opportunity for the Valley to get exposed to a professional author, and I love her books. She builds terrific characters, the plot and storyline captivate you, and I'm very much looking forward to meeting her …"

In October, Fifth Ave. Books will host author Victor Villaseñor for a book-signing, who will appear in support of "Thirteen Sense," the sequel to the heralded "Rain of Gold."
