Pioneers to discuss search for CEO, top financial officer

August 25, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — The Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District board will discuss seeking new chief executive and chief financial officers during its meeting Monday.

The item will be discussed in closed session during a meeting set to start at 5:15 p.m.

The search for a new CEO and CFO started in April after the board voted 3-2 to end its $590,000 per year contract with Portland, Ore.,-based Brim Healthcare Inc., which had managed the hospital for 14 years.

CEO Richard Mendoza and CFO Daniel Heckathorne are Brim employees and clauses in their contracts prohibit them from continuing in their positions without Brim managing the hospital.

The Pioneers board had explored possibilities of retaining Mendoza and Heckathorne but agreed their retention is improbable, since Brim is steadfast in prohibiting the two from continuing.

The hospital has advertised locally and nationally to fill the positions. The two contracts officially ended in July but Brim had said it will continue providing services until the hospital has found new management.

Board member Leo Haggarty said he is not sure what the board will discuss at its meeting. Haggarty supported continuing its contract with Brim.

Trustee Katy Santillan said she has not received any information on what will be discussed. Santillan has been vocal in calling on the board to hire its own CEO and CFO.

Both Haggarty and Santillan said Friday they were unsure if the hospital has received applications for the positions.
