August 28, 2001|By AARON CLAVERIE, Staff Writer

An El Centro firefighter held the lifeless hand of a woman as another firefighter maneuvered the "Jaws of Life" toward a crumpled white truck this morning.

The firefighter ripped off a chunk of the truck to free the woman's body before a crowd of onlookers.

The woman, whose name had not been released this morning, died around 9 a.m. after the white truck in which she was riding collided with a yellow tractor-trailer rig jackknifed across Interstate 8 near the Fourth Street off-ramp around 9 this morning.

The driver of the truck and the driver of the rig suffered minor injuries.

California Highway Patrol officers and El Centro police were investigating the cause of the accident.
