Calexico man, 70, dies after being struck by truck while crossing street

CALEXICO — A 70-year-old Calexico resident here died after he was struck by a truck this morning while crossing a street, the second man in his 70s hit by a vehicle and killed in Calexico in two days.

Imperial County Deputy Coroner Gary Hayes said the man was trying to cross the street in the 900 block of Imperial Avenue in front of a 7-Eleven convenience store at 6:12 a.m.

The name of the victim was not available this morning.

The driver of the pickup remained at the scene. His name also was not available.

Hayes said the victim died at the scene.

In a similar but unrelated incident, investigators released the name of a man struck and killed by a van Thursday morning in Calexico.

Hayes said Juan Rodriguez, 79, of Calexico was struck at 7 a.m. Thursday while crossing Rockwood Avenue where it intersects with Fifth Street.


Calexico fire officials said Rodriguez was conscious but unresponsive and was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center, where he died of head injuries around noon.

Information on the driver of the van was not available but fire officials said the driver remained at the scene after the accident.
