Plans under way for Mexican Independence celebration in Calexico

CALEXICO — The Calexico Chamber of Commerce, the city of Calexico and Alford Distributing are planning this year's Mexican Independence Day celebration here.

Calexico chamber president Libby Peraza announced the celebration will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 16 in Crummett Park.

An official Independence Day ceremony, scheduled for 7 p.m., will include an array of local dignitaries including Calexico's Mexican consul, Rita Vargas, and Calexico Mayor Victor Carrillo.

The Calexico Police Department Explorers and the Colegio de Bachilleres from Mexicali will be providing color guards. Mexicali's Banda de Guerra will perform during the presentation of flags from both countries.

A variety of folkloric dance groups, local singer Ricardo Sanchez and mariachi groups will be among the entertainment. There will be a free dance for all those attending the event, with music provided by Galaxy DJ.

Food, beverages and arts and crafts booths will be set up for the celebration.
