Marguerite A. "Petre" Melvin

No funeral services will be conducted for Marguerite "Petre" Melvin, 77, of Bombay Beach who was cremated. She died Tuesday in John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio.

Mrs. Melvin was born May 18, 1923, in Williamson, W.V.

She was a member of the American Guild of Variety Artists and in later years worked in the health-care field.

She was a 23-year member of the American Legion auxiliary, Unit 801, Bombay Beach. She served in many offices in the auxiliary, including as president of her unit and District 30.

She also served on commissions for the American Legion auxiliary, department of California.

American Legion auxiliary Unit 801, Bombay Beach will conduct a memorial service for Mrs. Melvin in October. The specific date will be announced at later date.

Survivors include longtime friends Audrey Hoffmeyer, David Hoffmeyer, Ray Fischer and Frank Raymond.


Memorial services will be private for Nancy Byrd Root, 86, of Niland, who died Thursday in Palm Desert.


Mrs. Root was born March, 15, 1915, in Brentwood, Texas. She married Harvey Root on Dec. 19, 1976, in Bombay Beach.

She was a teacher and a member of the American Legion auxiliary for 20 years. She also volunteered for Pioneers Memorial Hospital foundation in Brawley.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louann Marinos, in 1991.

Survivors include husband, Harvey S. Root of Niland; son, Raymond Evans of Placentia; daughters, Pat Siniboldi of Alvin, Texas, and Mary Anderson of Huntington Beach; and stepsister, Mary Bellow of Brownwood, Texas.
