WESTMORLAND — A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a probation violation after a 30-minute standoff with county Sheriff's Office deputies Sunday near here.

Deputies were unavailable for comment late Sunday, but Westmorland police Officer Fred Beltran Jr. said deputies were called to a home at 1955 W. Highway 86, west of Westmorland, about 9 a.m.

Beltran said he was not sure why deputies were called to the scene, but he said a resident of the house, Shawn Swearingen, barricaded himself inside for about 30 minutes.

Deputies talked him into surrendering.

Beltran said he was not sure why Swearingen was arrested, but a county jail spokeswoman said he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Beltran said weapons of some type were found inside the house.

Swearingen was living at the home with his elderly mother.

He is being held at the county jail with bail set at $100,000 and $2,500 for an alleged probation violation.
