Drowning, desert victims found, likely undocumented immigrants

September 05, 2001|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

The death toll of undocumented immigrants continued to rise Tuesday as the bodies of two people were found, one in the All-American Canal and one in Imperial County's western desert.

At noon an Imperial Irrigation District maintenance worker found the body of a man in the All-American near Winterhaven.

County Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes said the identity of the man, thought to be about 20 years old, was unknown this morning.

Hayes said the body likely had been in the canal about a day before it was found.

The body was thought to be that of an undocumented immigrant, Hayes said.

The body of another person, also thought to be undocumented immigrant, was found in the desert area near Ocotillo.

There were few details on that case available this morning, including whether the body was that of a man or a woman.

The body was discovered about 8 p.m., Hayes said.
