Property tax voting procedures approved

September 05, 2001|By LAURA MITCHELL, Staff Writer

The county Board of Supervisors approved procedures for Proposition 218 property tax voting yesterday.

Prop. 218 requires a public hearing and approval by property owners for new land taxes.

The Gateway project near the Calexico Port of Engry will be the first proposed tax connected to Prop. 218 balloting.

John Pierre Menvielle, one of the Gateway project landowners, said his property should not be part of the assessment because the land is unusable since the county has not approved drainage under Highway 7. Menvielle's request will be examined by county officials.

The board also held a public hearing on the Niland County Service Area 1 unit fee tax. The board kept the tax at $14 for another year after no one spoke at the hearing.

In other action, the board:

· approved attending the Border Trade Alliance International Conference Sept. 27-29 in Yuma,

· contracted with Floyd Nelson & Sons to install the remaining portion of the waterline connections for the POE Colonia,

· approved employing Sutro & Co. as financial advisor,

· had a budget workshop.
