Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Calexico for John James "Jimmy" Escamilla, 72, of Calexico, who died Thursday in El Centro Regional Medical Centro. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with the Revs. Edmundo Zarate of Our Lady and Barry Vinyard of the Imperial Valley Catholic Chaplaincy officiating.

Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.

Mr. Escamilla was born Nov. 24, 1928 in Calexico, where he attended schools, including Calexico High School. He later married Socorro Bautista.


Mr. Escamilla went on to work for the Imperial Irrigation District in 1949. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950 to serve during the Korean War.

He then returned to Calexico and continued working for the IID until his retirement in 1991. He worked in construction for the district.

Mr. Escamilla was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid softball player, according to his family.

He is survived by his wife, Socorro Escamilla of Calexico, children, Elvira Velarde of Calexico, Christina Escamilla of San Diego, and daughter and son-in-law Elsa and Enrique Cervantes of El Paso; brothers, Cruz Escamilla of Soledad, Eddie Escamilla of Calexico and Magdaleno Escamilla of Holtville; sisters, Aurora Felix of Watsonville and Mary Rodriguez of Calexico; grandchildren, Alfonso Velarde of Los Osos, Monica Velarde of Calexico, Alejandra "Alex" and Enrique Manuel Cervantes, both of El Paso; great-grandchildren, Robert and Celest Corona of El Paso; and numerous nieces and nephews.
