Voice: El Centro had a citizens police academy

September 08, 2001

I applaud Chief Tunson and the Calexico Police Department on their recent citizens police academy. But, in defense of several outstanding citizens of the city of El Centro, I must correct the statement that, "This has never happened before in the history of Imperial County."

The El Centro Police Department held at least two citizens police academies during 1994-1995. Citizens attended classes over an eight-week period and the course was well-received. Classes were taught by department members.

Several of our citizens graduated from the academies, which were part of our efforts to promote community-oriented policing in El Centro, and they deserve acknowledgment for their participation. If further information is needed, please contact my office at 337-4528.
