Eagle runners place at meet

SAN DIEGO — Four runners for the Southwest High School boys and girls cross country teams earned medals in the Bronco Roundup cross country invitational at Rancho Bernardo High School here.

Sal Acevedo led the Southwest boys, taking fifth place among 53 runners on the two-mile course with a time of 10 minutes, 51 seconds. Southwest's Doug Fulp placed ninth on 11:01, followed by teammate Garrett Bishop in 11:07. Isaiah Obeso finished in 11:46, taking 25th place for Southwest.

The only Eagle girl to medal was Monica Gamboa, who took 30th place in 14:50. Southwest's Jessica Thompson finished 37th in 15:01, with teammate Abril Diaz taking 43rd in 15:25.

Southwest hosts the inaugural Southwest Invitational at 5 p.m. Wednesday in El Centro.

Brawley at Baron Invitational

CHULA VISTA — The Brawley Union High School girls cross country team took fourth and its boys were fifth at the Baron Invitational at Bonita High here Friday.


Claudia Dominguez took sixth place overall on the 2.2- mile girls course to lead the Wildcat girls. She finished in 11 minutes, 54 seconds. Brawley's Meg Allen was 22nd (14;49), Xiomara Fabela was 28th (15:07) and Jennifer Cardenas 32nd (15:12).

Holtville's Liz Robinson took 12th (14:30).

Alfredo Campos led the Brawley boys, finishing 15th (17:37). Hector Martinez was 24th (18:03), Luis Maldonado 33rd (18:19), Gerardo Contreras took 34th (18:19) and Jesus Dedios was 35th (18:21).

Holtville's Edel Lopez took 18th (17:42) on the 3.1 mile boys course.


Brawley at Madison tourney

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High School volleyball team won the Madison High School tournament after going 3-0 here Saturday.

Leighan Sudduth was named tournament MVP and her teammates Kristen Colace and Kaylin Rubin were named to the tournament's first team.

Brawley will play at Yuma High at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
