Voice: Talented music educator returning, continuing legacy

September 08, 2001

It is great to see one of our own come back to the Valley to give back. I'm speaking about the recently hired Ernie De La Vega, Southwest High School's new band director. With the addition of Mr. De La Vega we again see the lasting impressions of Jimmie Cannon's legacy as an educator.

Ernie may be new as a teacher but he brings with him a wide variety of experiences. Aside from being an excellent musician, Ernie is devoted to quality results, is extremely personable, goal-oriented and as I've already stated, local!

If this sounds a little prejudiced it may be. I've known and worked with Ernie for many years. I know, as do his friends, of what he is capable. I know that the students, faculty and community will show him the support deserved.

Ernie, like many of our talented music educators, could have chosen many other locations to be a music educator, (yes, they are hard to find) yet Ernie, like the others, sees what is special about Imperial Valley. He likes it here! Why? I think it must be the warmth and the heart of Vallyites and the values taught and learned here.

Welcome home, Ernie. I'm looking forward to performing alongside you again!
